The bright orange colour of the Calendula marigold is due to its content of lutein, a carotenoid which has been shown to be healing to the skin and connective tissues, and iodine, an antiseptic.
Calendula is used both internally and externally for healing problems of membranes which are naturally tender, such as the mucus membranes, or tissues which have become tender because of irritation or injury.
Like Arnica, but to a gentler degree, Calendula causes a mild local irritation, which stimulates the body to send more blood and white blood cells to the area. It is also used as an overall and glandular cleanser.
