Polygala was originally used by Taoist and other Oriental spiritual seekers because it was believed to be supportive of the mind and spiritual development. It is traditionally used as a tonic to the peaceful state of calm strength referred to as Shen in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Specifically, it is used to relax the mind, calm emotions, and facilitate sleep. It is not, however, considered a sedative, but is more clarifying in nature, and also helpful for dreaming. Its ancient name means “Will Strengthener”, and it was also used to help manifest ideas and provide power to the will in carrying out decisions, life changes and commitments.
